Answer to the Question

The UPC code or bar code has nothing to do with a best use-by or expiration. It is used solely to ID the manufacturer and the product.

Comments

Best usage dates are a joke. Open it and smell the contents. If not unpleasant, cook those beans. They really only start to slowly spoil when in contact with air.

*I agree, for the most part, and some canned food can last for 5 years.

More information

Best Used By Dates aren't a joke. Good companies can spend a lot of time and effort to make sure the product you buy stays good within the recommended time frame. The "best by" date does not mean it is spoiled after that date. What it means, is that the product is guaranteed to be at its best color, flavor, texture and nutrition. Beyond that date, deterioration will be obvious to the trained eye and palate, though it does not necessarily mean it is unwholesome.

If the can is in good condition and isn't swollen or leaking, the contents are likely still good to use. But the contents can deteriorate even when the can isn't opened.
