This is quite controversial. It is well known that some people need more sleep than others, I don't think anyone, including doctors, would disagree with that. However if you are one of those people that needs 7 - 8 hours sleep you should take it. If not it will manifest itself in a variety of ways, from just being irritable to a total breakdown. Your body will tell you when you are tired, listen to it.
There are also times when we need more sleep than normal, when we are ill for instance, or when a lady is pregnant, take heed of what your body is telling you.
