Arethusa is a minor goddess called a Nereid, her stream is in Syracuse on the island of Ortygia near Sicily. The myth goes that tried to flee the lustful river god Alpheios, who mingled his waters with hers.
In Greek mythology, Alpheus was a river god who fell in love with the nymph Arethusa. She tried to escape his advances by transforming into a stream, but Alpheus also transformed into a river to pursue her. The two were eventually united and their waters mingled in Sicily. This story represents the unending pursuit of love and the idea that true love will always find a way to overcome obstacles.
Arethusa was a follower of Artemis who vowed chastity like the goddess. One day, the river-god named Alpheus fell in love with her and started to chase her. He was about to catch her but, she called to Artemis for help. The goddess changed her into a stream. Alpheus then turned himself into a river and attempted to mingle his waters with the stream. Before he could do so, Artemis dammed him up and left him in thwarted flood.
