Remote sensing includes tools like radar and satellites. This gives meteorologists the ability to monitor the earth from above (Satellites), looking at clouds, moisture content, and ocean temperature, among other things. Radar is a vital tool for forecasting (or really, nowcasting) precipitation, especially severe weather.
