Could it be the Neutral Safety Switch is out of alignment? Thinks Reverse is Neutral?

I don't know Rovers, but there is a safety switch in vehicles with Automatic Transmissions, that prohibit the vehicle from being started in a Driver or Reverse gear.

What does a Buick century 1995 3.1 neutral safety switch control Will it keep a trans from going into reverse?

A neutral safety switch makes sure that the gear select is either in neutral, or park, befor a car is allowed to start. No, it will not stop a trans for allowing you to put it in reverse.

Why does your reverse lights come on when you turn the egnition over but it will not start?

Depends on if it's a standard or automatic, If it's an automatic the shift linkage may have slipped forcing it to be stuck in reverse. Also causing it not to start, since cars are only supposed to start in neutral and park.

Is there a neutral switch on a 1991 Lincoln Continental?

Automatic transmissions have what is called a Neutral Safety switch. This eliminates the possibility of accidentally starting your vehicle in reverse or any forward gear. The vehicle will only start in park or neutral. Chris

It needs to be in park or neutral to start. All cars have a "safety" switch which prevents starting in gear.

What if your 1998 ford contour is stuck in reverse and the engine will not turnover is the car being stuck in reverse making the car not start?

YESAn automatic transmission car has a safety feature called a "Neutral Safety"It will not allow the starter to work if the shifter is not in either neutral or park. Many new cars will only start in park.On a manual transmission car the transmission being stuck in reverse probably means a serious failure inside the transmission that could jam things up to the point the engine wont start.

When in park on steering column the car is actually in reverse and the car never gets into park Thus you have to start the car in neutral How do you fix it?

Where is the park reverse switch for a 1995 Camaro?

If you meant the neutral start switch, it is located on the upper part of the automatic transmission. Not sure if that's what you wanted though.

I have a Mazda 1989 626 and it wont start all the time The time it doesn't start it will just click Ive replaced the starter battery cables neutral safety switch and the battery?

I have a 89 Mazda 626 with a similar problem. Sometimes when I go to start it it won't start. (It does not click like yours does.) All I do is put the car in neutral and turn the key. It starts right up. Maybe this could help you.
