Hotmail was founded by Sabeer Bhatia and Jack Smith. It was commercially launched in July 1996. In December 1997, it was sold to Microsoft for $400 million.
The Hotmail email system was founded by Sabeer Bhatia, an Indian-American entrepreneur. He sold the service to Microsoft in 1998, and withdrew his involvement with the system shortly afterwards.
The Hotmail web-based email service first launched in 1996 as HoTMaiL by its creators, Jack Smith and Sabeer Bhatia. It was sold to Microsoft the next year, which continued to operate the Hotmail service until it was merged into Microsoft Outlook in April 2013.
