As a flight attendant I have been through situations in which your emergency training is really needed to help others in a situation in which something went wrong that causes an emergency. Usually under your seats you will find life jackets in case of a ditch in a body of water. Above you in your personal uses there is a oxygen mask that opens from its compartment to allow for you to breathe in case if there is a decompression suring the flight. Actually when the mask comes out of the compartment two chemicals react and create the oxygen you breathe. Another is emergency exit doors. Anyone over 16 can sit in those seats next to the emergency exits. They are hard to get open when they are jammed or damaged in the after math of a crash so generally most airlines require passengers over 16 to sit in those seats. Once you open them they allow for you and fellow passengers to evacute from the plane. These are just the basics and I hope it is answering your question. :)
