the stuff could happen and the phenomenon has a sort of scientific "explanation" behind it, plus Science Fiction usually is more futuristic.

Science fiction stories are based on a reasonable extrapolation of known science and technology, and once that extrapolation is made it cannot be changed arbitrarily without explanation to the reader/viewer. H. G. Wells & Isaac Azimov stories are generally excellent examples.
Because fiction is included.

Take away the fiction and you have a thought experiment, like what Einstein was fond of telling.

Science fiction is based on scientific knowledge. The facts in the science fiction stories and books could actually occur, based on our current understanding of science.

Answer:
Science fiction is based on the existence of a science that is available to the characters (space flight, ray guns, teleportation) that is not available to the modern world. It is gnerally based on events in a future time and exhibits several standard memes (time travel, spacfilight, other dimensions, alien contact, medical advances, immortality etc.) Essentially the setting is "What if we could do something that is seen to be impossible or improbable now."The story then goes on to examine the socail changes that might occur if ths technology were aalable. Poor science fiction simply puts, for example, ray guns in the hads of cowboy equivalent characters and replaces natives with Martians and tells a cowby story. This however does not make it different from other types of fiction. Science fiction is different in some ways from other popular fiction:
  • Unlike ghosts, wampyr and werewolf staories it "might" happen
  • Unlike romance stories the themes of romantic love are downplayed or missing
  • Unlike prnography there are no lurid sex scenes
  • It has a lot of fan based following and amateur contribution

Somewhat, science fiction is like Star Wars and Star Trek. They're very futuristic with lots of scientific gadgets but the story and the world created by the writers is not real.
