A Google search of "John Jacob Astor" turned up over 200,000 hits. (Be forewarned, however, that a person by the same name was on the Titanic, and might have been a descendant of the original Astor.) Any respectable book about the fur trade, especially the Canadian fur trade, will likely include references to Astor. Books about the major Canadian fur trading companies (the Hudson's Bay Company and its rival the North West Company) will probably lead you to a valuable bibliography. J. M. Bumsted and Peter C. Newman are two modern Canadian authors whose books about the Canadian fur trade have included material about Astor.
