The novel and later motion picture takes place in the American West- probably Texas in the late nineteenth century. One adds the latter point as there are no motor vehicles ( such as trucks, cars, etc) in the movie version. The tragic dog tale has no direct connection with Bull Fighting, at least in the common sportive sense of the word. there may have been bulls fighting on a ranch- but that is not the same thing.
