The climax in "The Good Deed" is Mrs. Pan's decision to help Lili by arranging a marriage for her. One could argue that the climax was Mrs. Pan's decision to work with old Mr. Lim to arrange a marriage for their two respective young people. (The reader can envision Mrs. Pan's eyes brightening, or the proverbial lightbulb over her head, when she discovers the existence of a single man Lili's age in the immediate vicinity.) Either way, the climax is in Mrs. Pan's decision to arrange Lili's marriage.

While arranging a marriage may not seem to be much of a favor, it has several benefits. First, it allows Mrs. Pan the opportunity to feel useful again. Secondly, it ends up allowing her to carry her cultural traditions into her new environment. Lastly, it clearly benefits Lili, since Lili admits she would like to be married but has not had the opportunity. Mrs. Pan employs clever planning and mild deception to put Lili and yound Mr. Lim in the same room, and the two young people seem immediately at ease with each other. Mission accomplished.
