For those traveling to Paris for any reason, the city’s shopping options cannot be ignored. Paris is one of the fashion capitals of the world, and many designers choose to sell their wares in Paris. However, the city is also home to many dealers in luxury items, antiques, books, and several world famous department stores. While traveling in Paris, shopping opportunities will be everywhere.
The most famous and the most high-end shopping district is the area around the Place Vendome. Home also to the famous Ritz hotel, the boutiques arranged along the oval perimeter of the Place Vendome are operated by some of the world’s most famous designers, such as Cartier, Dior, Gucci, and Prada. Everything in the area is extremely expensive, but also extremely fashionable, selling much of what Paris is famous for throughout the globe, its designer fashion. Dominated by la Colonne Vendome, erected by Napoleon to commemorate his victory at the Battle of Austerlitz, the Place Vendome is certain to thrill any traveler looking for the fabled glamour of Paris.
A few blocks north of the Place Vendome, a traveler will find the Galeries Lafayette, and Printemps, two of the city’s most famous department stores. Located incredibly near each other, both offer the visitor the very height of what is imagined in a Parisian department store. Both department stores occupy multiple buildings, and offer many different floors, selling fashion, food, souvenirs, furniture, accessories, and very nearly anything imaginable. When combined, they offer totals of more than 40 complete floors of shopping located in six different buildings.
In order to experience Paris’ shopping options to the fullest, however, the city’s many windy streets must be explored. In any given street or alleyway, there is a boutique or store selling any variety of items. Along the river Seine, on the left bank, are a number of used book and memorabilia vendors, referred to as the Bouquinistes. Their sidewalk stalls sell books in countless languages, as well as old records, CDs, posters, and odd, one-of-a-kind knick knacks.
Paris offers much to the traveler, but any traveler should realize that the shopping options available in Paris are second to none, and are integral part of experiencing and understanding the city.
