Distance education has been around for many years. At first, it took the form of correspondence courses, where people could learn to write stories or to be a private investigator by taking classes through the mail. When the internet began to be popular some of these courses began to be offered online, sometimes giving students the option to take the class through the mail or online. These days most schools only offer online distance learning. It has grown from being something only offered by a few unaccredited schools into something that is very mainstream and is offered by many colleges and universities on many different subjects.
