They smell quite bad.
They shouldn't smell if the tank they are kept in is kept clean and not over moist. If uneaten food is left to rot then this can cause the smell and of course the bigger they get the more poop that is created, so needs to be cleaned out often.
Also it can be the kind of subtrate you are using, I use a bark type base not the soil kind as that did have slight odour to it.
