They joined what was then called the EEC in 1973. It would be up to the British people to decide if they want to leave it. All EU countries would have some people in them that would not want to be in the EU, but it has been beneficial for most countries and so the majority of people and the governments in those countries want to stay as members. There are things even the supporters of EU membership may not like, but overall it is seen to have more advantages to be in the EU than not.

Will Brexit cause the EU to collapse?

Britain is just one of 28 members. It is an important country in Europe, but the EU can function without it. What was then the EEC was formed in 1957 by six countries. Britain did not join until 1973. So it was 16 years without Britain being involved. The EEC evolved and more countries joined and it is now called the EU. The EU may need to reform as a result of the decision of Britain to leave, to change some of the reasons why Britain felt it should leave. It will take time for Britain to leave and there is even the possibility that they will decide not to.

Should British leave the subcontinent?

"The subcontinent" is India and Pakistan. The British left there in 1948. Should you mean Britain's exit from the European Union, the answer is that the exit has a firm base in Britain's deep-rooted reluctance to hand over its sovereignty to the EU's civil servants in Brussels. But from a purely economic perspective Britain's exit may not be a good idea, as the EU will very probably flatly refuse to allow Britain easy access to the European market while Britain in turn might block free traffic of goods, persons and services from EU into the UK. So the exit will probably in the long term hurt the UK's economic development.
