That's debatable. Many other people had traveled to the Americas before Columbus, including Leif Erikson. On the other hand, among the "civilized" world (e.g. Mainland Europe) had very little idea of the New World's existence. Though Amerigo Vespuccie, whom Americas is named after, had maps of the area before Columbus.

To be fair though, he was the one who made knowledge of the New World common and widespread. But a "discovery"? Probably not.
