You should play the violin, it is classical and has a beautiful sound.
Wow, I totally disagree. The violin is terribly difficult to get an agreeable sound in the beginning. It can take many weeks of scales and exercises before you can play the most basic of songs.
The banjo is an instrumental that has been in one form or another around nearly as long as the violin. One form of the banjo the Akonting started in Africa and was brought over here by slaves.
Using basic chord shapes and a simple strum you can play a simple song in just a few hours or less.
But, if you like frustration go for the violin and give it a few years.
