it is realy hard to answer these types of ?'s without looking at your system i suggest trusting your gutt and your tech
Most central air-conditioners will have to be replaced, and should be replaced by a Heating and air conditioning service person, who is liscened to do this work. It is dangerous and it needs a professional to refill the condensor. If your not sure it is the condensor, a professional can monitor, the air fow and tell you for sure.
Your condensor outside , where the compressor is . should have an information plate showing the type of refrigerant used

Do you have a dual capacitor that starts both the compressor and the fan motor? You need 230V to power the compressor. You should have one wire from the capacitor going from the start terminal on the compressor and one going from the common terminal to common on the capacitor.

Check Your Chevy Dealer, But It Should Be In The Bottom Of The Condensor. It Is A Little Techinacal To Replace, Suggest A Good Shop For This.
Press one of the Schrader Valves to see if pressure is there. Turn AC on and look at the compressor clutch for engagement. If it won't kick on, the system is low or the compressor is bad must replace receiver/dryer asst also.
