An MD. Some MDs do osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) now. Most DOs do not perform OMT now. DOs instead rely on traditional medicine such as prescribing medication, performing surgery, specializing in radiology, surgery, OB-GYN, and other fields. It's rare to find DOs doing manipulation anymore, they are now just Doctors of Medicine only! --------- Source???

No, a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) is a medical physician who completed medical school, earned their medical degree, and received a few hundred hours of instruction in osteopathic manipulative therapy (OMT). There are many DOs who do not actively practice OMT, but some do integrate it into their medical practice. Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine and Doctors of Medicine (M.D.) usually go into a residency program following completion of four years of medical school and pursue additional training to specialize in a certain medical field.

Will a DO refer a patient to see an MD for manipulation?

Yes. A DO will refer a patient to see an MD who peforms manipulations or has a physical therapist work for him. Sometimes, MDs or DOs specialize in physiatry and will use manipulation in their specialty. Most DOs only do traditional medicine, surgery, and specialty medicine now and leave osteopathic manipulative medicine or treatment to MDs now. The only problem you may encounter is that when a DO refers a patient to an MD for osteopathic manipulative treatment, most insurances will not pay for it. If the DO refers you to a physical therapist or chiropractor, the insurances may or may not pay for it. Most likely and unfortunately, you will have to pay out of pocket! ----- Source?

What is Osteopathic Medicine?

Osteopathic Medicine is practiced by Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) with a philosophy of treating people, not just symptoms or diseases. This has sometimes been referred to as Holistic Medicine, meaning treatment of the whole person, with regard to their bodies and symptoms (just like Doctors of Medicine (MD)), and also with regard to their home, jobs, and environment to make a full assessment of their health and wellness. Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine take additional courses on diagnosing musculoskeletal dysfunctions in their patients on top of the same types of classes that MDs take, and they are trained to use some forms of Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) that is not taught to MDs. It is one of the two types of study and practices of doctoral level medicine licensed in the US. The other type of medicine is practiced by Doctors of Medicine and is often defined as the treatment of symptoms and disease using traditional medical therapies. This is sometimes also referred to as "allopathic medicine", however, it is not a term that is accepted by all MDs, since it was originally coined by critics of traditional medicine and was used with a negative connotation. MDs and DOs share more similarities than differences in the scope and practice of their work. Both MDs and DOs are licensed to provide identical services to patients including surgery and other specialties. Their studies and training are equal at all levels and in all areas (except as noted above). They must both pass comparable examinations to become licensed to practice medicine in the states in the US. They are also typically equally paid to perform the same functions and give the same levels and quality of care.
