Before I answer your question, I have to tell you that you shouldn't be doing this yourself if you have no experience with it. Before you attempt to shoe a horse, you should have seen a farrier doing it a few times, and paid attention to the details involved in the process. And that's the bare minimum level of experience. Horses are extremely strong and occasionally they kill people who don't know how to handle them properly. If you make a mistake during the shoeing you can cause a number of problems for the horse including lameness and infection. I have been handling horses for about 15 years and I have assisted a farrier with shoeing about 20 times. I do not yet feel confident about my ability to shoe a horse.
Now to answer your question. First you should prepare the hoof that you will be shoeing. This involves snipping off large pieces of hoof, and paring off finer pieces to get a strong base for the shoe. During this process you can determine where the sensitive nerve endings in the hoof are. Based on this information you can decide how deep you can safely position the nails. The hoof wall is the safest place to put the nails, but the less hoof that is holding the nail in, the more likely it is that the shoe will be thrown off.
