It depends if a character die in a way that it's appropriate, it also depend in what the character is doing. The main character has to be a total idiot if he/she dies at the very end. Never kill a good protagonist just to make him/her prove how heroic he/she is. If there is a second main character in the plot and that character take the place of the protagonist then that character should have been introduced at the beginning and throughout the story. -That's my opinion anyways.
