You certainly aren't obligated to. How do you feel? If you have enough energy, go ahead and send a simple card. If your energy is low and the thought of sending Christmas cards is daunting, you have a few options (1) have a friend put the cards together with you and help you mail them, (2) send a Christmas email or post a facebook note, or (3) take this year off - heaven knows folks will understand.
Family and longtime friends act as a support network during grief, so staying connected can be good for you -- but adding to much to your list of to do's can overwhelm your "grief brain". Maybe this doesn't help, but do what you feel up to and don't have a second thought for anything you don't feel up to just now.
At least this is how I've gotten through this widow mess so far...
