It would depend on what you are comparing 'equal' to.
Animals are just that. Animals. In the sense of they are not human and cannot be compared with humans.
Certainly all animals are deserving of being treated with such compassion and as humanely as is befitting.
Wanton cruelty towards them should be discouraged and legislated against.

Next time yousee those little commericals with the sad music and pathetic little animals think about how those very people don't want you to eat pork or beef. They want the world to be vegetarian. They think that if you eat meat, you're cruel to animals.

In my view, animals should have basic rights, such as not to suffer under the hands of humans for no good reason, but they should not be given human rights.
