Why? Owning firearms is perfectly legal, a right guaranteed by the Constitution, although a highly regulated right. Regardless of the hype put out by the Brady organization, criminals and terrorists are not getting machine guns and bombs at gun shows. Maybe dog shows and horse racing should be illegal because there are laws against animal cruelty.
To expand on the above, the concept of the gun show ( a place where vendors and enthusiasts can gather to enjoy themselves and engage in perfectly legal activities) is a good one. The major problem that gun shows have is the tendency to be rather cavalier in the sale and transfer of gun merchandise. Unlike gun stores, which generally adhere to quite strict standards for sales and background checks, vendors at gun shows are notorious for playing "fast and loose" with sales, and often completely ignoring the background check laws. This really isn't the fault of the gun show concept, but rather some unsavory or unethical vendors that ply their wares at them. The real solution is to not ban the gun show itself, but to have better quality vendors and for better policing of the vendors themselves, to make sure that everyone is following the law.
