It is used as a means of population control. This control allows for food to be distributed more evenly across animal populations which keeps more animals alive. This is because more animals will die on roads, from urbanization and from starvation that are killed from hunting. Hunting is a legitimate sport and is also necessary. The people at PETA and the like that protest hunting by default promote the starvation of animals.
