Finding a stable career is a real challenge these days, but there is one employer that continues to offer steady pay and benefits all year-round: the U.S. Army. Of course, a commitment to join the army is not one that you should take lightly. Here are some things to consider before you enlist.

The commitment

The Army promotes their expansive benefits package aggressively and is notorious for downplaying the commitment required to receive those benefits. That is not to say that the benefits are not worth it, but only you can decide if they are worth it for you. There are two basic plans when you enlist in the army: you can sign up for three years of active duty or six years in the reserve. Three years may not sound like much, but remember that if you join the army, you are on the rolls for a full eight years before you are eligible for discharge.

The benefits

If you enlist in the Army at the right place and time, you can receive a significant cash bonus. With that said, enlistment bonuses are just the beginning of your perks as an enlisted member of the Army. The total benefits package available to all active duty soldiers is worth approximately $100,000 not including your salary. In addition to bi-weekly paychecks and free base accommodations, during and after membership, you are eligible for up to $70,000 in educational assistance which includes up to $65,000 in pre-existing student loans. Full medical and dental benefits are also available to you and your family as well as a month of paid leave every year and a retirement plan that kicks in after 20 years of service.

The number one reason that you may choose not to enlist in the Army is the risk of injury or death. There is no denying that when you join the United States Armed Forces at this time, you have a very real risk of getting sent to war zones overseas. However, Army casualties are not as high as the media makes them appear. Another disadvantage of joining the Army is that you are committed to them for eight years, as outlined above. During those first years, you have little control over your job title or where you are stationed. Finally, if you are going to make the Army a career, you should know that skilled positions inside the Army pay far less than what your civilian counterparts make outside the Army.

Joining the army could change your life, but only you can decide if it is a change for the better or the worse. Find out more about what joining the Army could mean for you by exploring the commitment, benefits and disadvantages before enlisting.
