Silence is not required AND can actually make a very sensitive infant. Just be normal, without being really loud. You can do the dishes... but wait to run the vac cleaner. You can run the washer or dryer... but having your drive-way being jack-hammered is too loud. Have kids running around? Don't enforce silence on them! Your infant will learn to ignore most normal sounds, like your neighbor mowing their grass. Of course, a thunderclap will awaken any baby!
2-3 hours
A newborn may sleep as much as 16 hours a day (or even more), often in stretches of 3 to 4 hours at a time. And like the sleep all of us experience, babies have different phases of sleep: drowsiness, REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, light sleep, deep sleep, and very deep sleep. As babies grow, their periods of wakefulness increase. At first, though, the need to feed will outweigh the need to sleep. Many pediatricians recommend that a parent not let a newborn sleep too long without feeding. In practical terms, that means offering a feeding to your baby every 3 to 4 hours or so, and possibly more often for smaller or premature babies. Breastfed infants may get hungry more frequently than bottle-fed babies and need to nurse every 2 hours in the first few weeks.

I think they should because they aren't supposed to sleep on their face.
Newborn babies need a few things, but not many. They need to be fed, they need to be changed and they need to be loved. Many newborns want to cuddle, since they are in a whole new world and know nothing about it. They need to eat, they grow a lot these first few months. And they need to be changed, because well frankly, that's gross to not change them. The rest of the time they tend to sleep.
babies get to sleep just the way we do
Nurseries are advised to keep their baby rooms at around 16'C and the sleep rooms slightly cooler. Hope this helps!
