As much as possible cell references should be used rather than values. So if you are adding two values, where those values are likely to change, then it is better to use cell references. That way the formulas will not need to be updated when the numbers change. If you are doing a constant calculation, like always multiplying by the same value or always taking away the same value, and that value never changes, then you could put it direct into a formula. So if you were multiplying a set of values by 10, then you could put the following formula in, which uses a value in a cell reference and the constant value 10:

=A2*10

How are formulas different from text and numbers?

Formulas are instructions to the computer to do something, like a calculation. Numbers or text entered into a worksheet are fixed. They don't do anything as such. They can be used by formulas. All formulas begin with the equals sign. They may use functions. For text or numbers, there is just text or numbers in the cells.
