No drugs of any sort should be given to a patient who has received a serious injury without prior medical advice.

It is vitally important that doctors and other medical personnel can work with the actual symptoms in order to make the best possible assessment of the patient's condition. If drugs are given to deal with pain they can mask symptoms that may have been indications of something far more serious. If this happens it can delay treatment and could, in the worst case scenario, cost lives.

Never give any medication if you are unsure about it and never give any medication when there has been a serious injury, especially a head injury.

If you are based in the UK call NHS Direct on 08 45 46 47 or visit their website for an online assessment. http://www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk/

Most head injuries should be checked out by trained medical personnel. In the UK this is free and you won't need to phone ahead. In the US you will have to check with your insurance provider but will get free emergency care at certain hospitals.
