It depends, are you the type of person who lies to your parents a lot? If so, then your parents are most likely to read your texts. If not, then I don't see a reason other than the possibility that they may be very or even over-protective. I would say, however, that it IS an invasion of your privacy to have your mom/parent read your texts. You should be able to have privacy.
