I don't believe in allowance. You buy everything for them to begin with and they are part of a household. They sit on toilets, they eat food and eat off clean plates, they have clean clothes to wear, etc.
You need to make them earn money, showing them that if they want something they have to work for it. I have had my son, now 13, years old doing household chores, with no pay, since he was about five, within reason. He always has to keep his room kept and when I would be cleaning the house, he was given a few chores to do and as he grew the chores increased and were ones with more responsibility. I did however allow him to earn monies from mowing the lawn, 5.00, washing the car, inside and out, 5.00, any outside physical labor could earn him a few dollars, he also goes to work with my husband on weekends and summertime to do landscaping and gets 5.00 per job, so if they do 5 jobs he makes 25.00. Now my son cherishes his cash and saves it very well to buy things for himself and he feels proud to have earned it. He buys things that I wouldn't buy for him, like 85.00 sneakers or other high ticket items that I think are outrageous. I also make him earn video and tv time, this is helping to see that there is more beauty in the world then strife. He is a well rounded boy and a straight A student who is working on his eagle badge in boy scouts... Good luck and don't spoil, don't cave into parent pressure, just because other parents give allowance doesnt mean you do and if you do be reasonable to your pocketbook and make him them earn it, all.......
