If you want to lose your money, you have a better chance in Vegas. After GM declare bankruptcy the stockholders are the last to be paid, which mostly likely be nothing. Wait until after the bankruptcy.
Yes and no. You cannot but stock in the "New GM" (the company that just came out of bankruptcy), but you can buy stock in the company that was GM (but why would you want to?).
If you want some GM stock, open a Scottrade or Ameritrade account and buy it. Very easy to do.

If you are an extremely high risk investor who is least bothered if the money invested in the GM stock is as good as down the drain and who feels that the GM organization may regroup and come back on its feet - then the answer is YES. If you are not willing to take so much of risk, it is better to wait and watch.
Different people have different investment needs, but a diversified stock portfolio should have a few trustworthy big board stocks, and GM would not be a bad choice.
With GM problems now is not a good time to buy GM stocks.
That's generally what happens when you make a bad investment. Stock is equity...ownership....not debt or a loan to the Company.
