Hand walking at a steady pace is recommended, and in cases of non-surgical colic can provide the same movement and massaging of the intestines that helps pass an obstruction or get the gas bubble out.

∙ 11y agoNo, you should never allow a colicking horse to roll. Colic is a generic term for abdominal pain and can be due to many causes. Unfortunately, if the colic is due to an impaction or a large gas bubble, allowing the horse to roll could cause the intestines to twist around themselves. If the intestines tie into a knot, it can cause the intestines to rupture, which is fatal to horses.

∙ 14y agoNO/ FALSE rolling to a horse means pain releif, and you should contact the vet if you notice your horse getting up and down to roll. the earlier you call the vet, the better chance your horse has to live. NO NO NO walk your horse if they have colic

∙ 13y agoNo, you should call your equine vet and ask them to come out immediately for an emergency exam for colic. Colic is abdominal pain and can be due to a variety of causes - severe constipation, obstruction or twisted intestines are the most common. If your horse has colic and rolls, the horse may twist his intestines around each other cutting off the blood supply and gas outflow. This is a life-threatening emergency that can result in the death of the horse within a couple hours if not treated.

∙ 14y agoNot long ago my horse went down with colic i called the vet out and when he arrived she was rolling, he imediatley told me to get her up and lunge her at walking pase which help the digestive system with any problem and stops the gut from twisting. she luckily survived and has had no more problems but atleast now i know that she needs to walk

NO!! Do NOT allow a horse to lay down at ALL when they are colicking. They will want to lay down because they hurt -- when horses get an upset stomach, that is their way of dealing with it. It is our job to keep them on their feet at all costs, which can be very difficult if they are in a lot of pain. As the previous answerer stated: rolling when there is a gut problem can cause twisting and damage to the intestines, and walking helps to keep their digestion moving.

∙ 14y agoAbsolutely not!! When your horse has colic, it means that somethings blocked up inside of it. If you let it roll, then the intestine can move out of place inside the horse and get tangled up, causing much pain, vet help, and possibly death.

∙ 13y agoNO! that is the worst thing you could do for your horse when it is colicing. Do NOT let it roll! If you horse is laying down trying to roll get it to its feet and immediately start walking him all around with out stopping and what ever you do, do not let him lay back down. If it is a mild case of colic walk your horse until it has a bowel movement to make sure everything in unplugged inside of him. In any case of colic call your veterinarian IMMEDIATELY.

∙ 13y agoThey tend to try to roll frantically when they colic, but it is vital that you prevent them from rolling. If they roll, they risk twisting an intestine because of how frantically they roll, and this is often fatal. (Don't worry about a horse just rolling in the pasture though- there is a difference in a colic roll and a normal roll, and the normal roll posses no threat to the horse)

With either of these two types of colic, if a horse is allowed to roll he can wrap one loop of intestine around another loop and cut off flow of the liquid feces inside the intestines. Horses are hind-gut fermenters, meaning that a large amount of gas is produces within the intestines. If this gas cannot escape (because the intestines are wrapped around each other), the gas builds up until the intestines pop like a balloon - a 100% fatal occurrence.
