This would normally be a smoke alarm/detector. At the basic lengths, you should have a heat detector in the kitchen, smoke alarm in the hallway of every floor. I.e. the entrance hallway on the ground floor and the landing on the first floor, second floor etc. If possible, also put one in the loft/atic and the basement (if you have one).
It depends on the position of the oven, oven door, kitchen door and shape of house.

Smoke alarms need to be outside of each bedroom on the ceiling.Others have found that additional smoke alarms must be places INSIDE each sleeping area to be loud enough to wake up someone there, or to detect smoke from a fire inside the room.In non-dwellings, various fire codes and life safety codes determine the minimum number of smoke alarms and where they must be placed.
I would not install a smoke alarm, in the kitchen.
You should replace your batteries every 6 months. Smoke detectors save lives!
If the smoke alarm lasts for ten years before you need to replace it, and the batteries should be replaced at least once per year, you would need to change the batteries of a smoke alarm ten times before you replace the entire thing.
Any type of smoke, steam or particles denser than air will set off a smoke alarm. This means that smoke emitted from the incense will set off a smoke alarm when in range of the detector.
Some smoke detectors use ionizing radiation to sense smoke and it can become confused with water vapor (steam), which is why ionizing smoke detectors are not allowed anywhere near sources of steam. Try replacing it with a photo-electric detector and make sure it's outside of the immediate area of the shower (i.e., in the bedroom or out in the hallway).

if you take the smoke detector down there should be a list of of light and sound sequences refer to that.
A smoke alarm should never be turned off. If your smoke detector is not working correctly, you can start by taking a vacuum or a can of compressed air and clean any dust or dirt from inside the unit. If cleaning the unit does not help then you will need to have it replaced or repaired.
