Maybe, depending on which type of flu vaccine you will be taking. Acyclovir is an antiviral medication that can be used for influenza treatment, but is also used for other types of viral infections. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:

"It is not known whether administering influenza antiviral medications affects the safety or efficacy of live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV); LAIV should not be administered until 48 hours following cessation of influenza antiviral therapy, and influenza antiviral medications should not be administered for 2 weeks following receipt of LAIV."

For additional information about this and about contraindications in other situations, please see the CDC Guide to Contraindications for Vaccines at the link provided in the related links section of this page.

How long must a person be free of cold and flu symptoms before getting a flu shot?

While a flu shot will not be effective against any active flu symptoms it will protect against the other flu strains contain in the shot. Flu symptoms such as high fevers, upper respiratory problems should be controlled but the flu virus in a shot is a 'dead' non-active virus and should not affect or cause any current virus.

Last flu season, 2009-2010, you needed two shots. But this year the seasonal flu shot also protects against swine flu, so, in the US, you only need one flu shot for the 2010-2011 flu season.

Can you get the flu shot if you are taking a narcotic?

As long as the reason you take the narcotic would, by itself, not cause a problem with getting a flu shot. If in doubt, always contact your doctor's office and ask a nurse or the doctor there who knows your medical history what you should do. Or before you get the shot, tell the nurse giving it about your condition and they can decide if it is a good thing to get it then.

Can you get the flu shot while taking Flagyl?

There is no drug interaction problem between the flu vaccine and Flagyl. But whether you get the vaccination while still taking the antibiotic may depend on why you are taking antibiotics. If you have a current infection, it is usually better to wait until that is cleared up before taking vaccines. But, each situation can be different, and this is a question that the doctor who prescribed the antibiotics should be asked to know what is right in your case.Unless there is a specific reason your doctor wants you to wait, usually the only reason not to get a flu shot while taking antibiotics would be if you have an active infection with a high fever over 101 F. Get your flu shot unless you have a high fever, or the doctor recommends delaying the immunization due to your specific condition.
