If you bought the Forever Stamps for .39 the day before the rates went up to .41, you would have a gain of 5%. Not bad for a day! But let's say that you buy 100 at .41 for a total of 41 dollars. And sit them on the shelf until the rate goes up, let's say it goes up 2 cents again, and that the time frame, 16 months, is the same. That would mean a gain of $2.00 for keeping a 100 stamps on the shelf, a return of 4.8% over the time you held them, or 3.6% annual interest rate. And if the rates don't go up for 42 months, as they did between June 2002 and January 2006, the rate goes down to a whopping 1.4% annual return on investment. You can do better in an interest earning checking account!
