That depends on...

1) personal taste... Some folks like painted mouldings - then there is the whole, paint all mouldings one colour (white or off white) or paint the mouldings to match the colour of the room debate, others prefer natural/stained wood.

2) decorating style... If the home uses a lot of wood (paneling, wainscoting, cabinetry, hardwood flooring, etc) you may want to use stained wood. If the house is painted or wallpapered you may want to paint your mouldings (see the above on the colour debate).

3) the kind of mouldings you can afford/find. Composite materials, pre-primed, and inexpensive finger-joint woods should be painted. Real wood, such as clear pine, oak and mahogany (if you can find it) can be either stained or just sanded and top coated with a top quality poly.

What is the best type of paint for crown molding flat or glolss?

Most commonly moldings of all kinds (baseboard, casing, crown, picture, chair railing etc.) are painted in a harder finish (aka a higher gloss) paint. If you are after a "traditional" look, then use white or cream gloss paint, unless your crown is of a stain-grade wood and you have stained it. (I which case a gloss urethane works well as a top coat)Crown moldings in a kitchen, bathroom or on furniture (or cabinetry) it moist environments or where they will be touched regularly, should be painted in the highest gloss you can stand. In a bedroom, hallway, living room, dining room, study, library or den, a slightly lower gloss level (semi-gloss, pearl, or even satin) give a slightly "richer" look. These areas can also stand your crown moldings being painted a colour (other than white or cream). In whichs case, do not paint the moldings to "match" the wall colour, it would be a shame to go to the effort of installing crown molding and then paint it to minimize its existence.Note: Do remember, the higher the gloss the more reflection, and the more any flaws in the work will show.

How do you paint plastic decorative molding on windows?

In addition to the answer below, it is important to know if the moldings are interior or exterior. If they are interior, most of them can be removed (carefully) so they're easier to work on and any paint that drools onto other side can be removed. Exterior moldings are usually stationary and should be done by a professional who has the equipment to reach 2nd floors, knows what paints, stains, glazes, etc. to use, and is then responsible for anything that may go wrong,i.e. adhesion, color, technique. You may want to contact the manufacturer of the moldings to find out what they recommend. They're usually good about that. Scuff lightly with a high grit sand paper (800-1200 grit) clean with warm soapy water, plastic is petroluem based so a good dish soap will wash away the oils inherent on the molding. A good latex exterior grade paint will work fine. paint using your technique an let dry per specifications of paint you chose
