...if you shut off your computer.... you shut off windows along with it. Explain to me how you would shut down vista after your computer is off. That's a question worth asking on this site.
The answer is almost as interesting as the question.
The simple answer is 'NO', shut down Windows (whichever version) first, when it has shut down properly and it is safe to do so it will normally turn the computer off for you.
Just turning your computer off with the switch can cause your hard drive to loose data - which you probably do not want. However if Windows has hung and will not respond to any typing, clicking etc you may have no choice but to do this anyway and just hope nothing goes badly wrong.
You should buy an upgrade version of Windows Vista however your computer if running XP is likely not to be powerful enough to run windows vista. You should run Microsoft Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor before upgrading as this will show you any problems your computer may have running Vista.
There really is no benefit in using or having Windows Vista on your personal or business computer.

Vista is just a version of Windows; the version after Windows XP and before Windows 7. If a machine is Vista-ready or Vista-compatible, it just means that the hardware and available drivers are compatible with Windows Vista. You might be able to run that PC on Windows 7 or 8, but it depends, and you would have to check with the manufacturer to find out what all it is compatible with.
It depends a windows vista laptop or you could be talking about a 1970's mac.
As long as the computer meets the system requirements for Windows Vista, yes.
