Standard-issue Adderall (not the XR) should never be taken with food. You should give yourself at-least an hour on either side. In fact, it should be taken with water and not sugary drinks, fruit juices, or coffee. The efficacy is reduced considerably if you take it with a full meal.
Source: This advice was given to me by my prescribing physician, who is current in her study of the drug (in peer-reviewed journals). I can attest to the legitimacy of her advice because I used to eat with a dose (I eat too much and too often, so the 2 hour window is a trick sometimes) and noticed a huge difference once I changed the timing of my doses, relative to meals.
On an empty stomach, regular release Adderall will be effective in 15 minutes.
