You could use either one but if you don't care that much about fashion or looks just get a regular backpack, it can usually fit more items and is usually more durable.
A tote bag is better for more things but a backpacks better for durability and comfort.
i would say go with a book bag.

I have the grand tote and it is VERY big. If you have lots of stuff like I do, my old backpack could not fit my trapper, but this did. Just make sure your locker is big enough. If you do not have much stuff for school, i recommend the vera.
Well if you like tots then get a tote and if you like a backpack then get one. it's up to you really. I am getting a tote this year and i am like the fashionable London tip ton in my school but yo o with what you want it's totally your own style.
