High Detergent as opposed to Non Detergent
No. Depending on the mower, the correct oil will be SAE 30 or SAE 40. Make sure it is NON-DETERGENT
30 weight non-detergent oil is what was used in the 20s. But you can and should use SAE 30 High Detergent oil today as it will provide many benefits. If you have been using non-detergent oil then there is more than likely a sludge buildup in the engine at this time. You should not switch to High Detergent oil unless the engine has been rebuilt and totally cleaned. The reason is that the HD oil will loosen all this sludge and contaminate your crankcase. So, if you know the engine is clean then use SAE 30W otherwise use 30W non-detergent oil.
It has to be a non detergent oil
Detergent
Detergent! Do not use non-detergent oil.
Most small engine manufacturers recommend high detergent 30w oil (HD30) for their 4-cycle engines. The best thing to do is to check your operators manual, if available, to determine the proper oil for your particular engine. If you have no manual, most are available online these days.
It should say so on the bottle. If it has an API rating on the bottle, such as SM or CD. It is a detergent oil. Any non-detergent oil will say so on the package.
