It should say so on the bottle.

If it has an API rating on the bottle, such as SM or CD. It is a detergent oil. Any non-detergent oil will say so on the package.

What oil should you use in a model t?

30 weight non-detergent oil is what was used in the 20s. But you can and should use SAE 30 High Detergent oil today as it will provide many benefits. If you have been using non-detergent oil then there is more than likely a sludge buildup in the engine at this time. You should not switch to High Detergent oil unless the engine has been rebuilt and totally cleaned. The reason is that the HD oil will loosen all this sludge and contaminate your crankcase. So, if you know the engine is clean then use SAE 30W otherwise use 30W non-detergent oil.

What is the difference between detergent non detergent oil?

Detergent oil has added chemicals to clean and control sludge formation. Non-detergent is plain oil. Unless you have a really old engine that hasn't been apart for 50 years you want to use detergent oil.

Can you use non-detergent motor oil in a lawnmower?

Absolutely, positively, no! Non-detergent oil will destroy the engine over time. Use SAE 10W30 oil. I recommend synthetic oil in any Air Cooled engine.

Why is an HD oil preferred over a non detergent oil in a small engine?

Non-Detergne oil has not been used for years in any small engine. Reason being is that High Detergent oil contains detergents that aid in trapping particles, preventing sludge, preventing rust, and an alkaline to offset the acidic nature of oil on general. Never use Non-detergent oil in any internal combustion engine. Even an older engine will benefit from HD oil.

When did they put detergent in oil?

They started adding detergents to the oil in the 50s. Almost all modern multi-weight oils are detergent oils. The detergent cleans the soot off internal engine parts and suspends the soot particles in the oil. They are too small to be trapped by the oil filter and are held in place until you drain your oil which makes the oil turn dark. They will not harm your engine but need to be removed periodically. If you do not change your oil they form sludge. All modern cars today require the use of a detergent oil. This detergent is a cleaning additive that helps prolong engine life. There are some applications that require the use of a non-detergent oil such as, compressors and some older small engines.

Can you use non detergent pump oil in the pressure washer engine?

Absolutely not. Use 10w30 high detergent oil just like you use in your lawn mower or vehicle.
