Young, healthy, happy people, living on a song and gliding through life without health insurance, may be wondering if they should sign up with the federal health insurance exchange.

Buying insurance doesn't take care of all medical bills. But it does ward off financial ruin in the case of serious bad luck, and having insurance means easy access to care. Doctors need to be paid. However, if you have insurance, you'll get charged at the discounted insurance company rate, which should save you money as you spend through the deductible.

So, although the vast majority of young adults stay healthy, serious trouble is not rare. Those without insurance are playing the odds. If they win, they've saved the insurance premiums. If they lose, they're ruined.

What should you look for in health insurance coverage?

A good health insurance policy depends on who you are. If you're young and in good health, you may want cheaper premiums; however, if you have children, your health insurance coverage should ideally cover medical visits, prenatal care and the ICU. Basically, it varies according to what your needs are.

Is it a good idea to convert group life insurance to individual life insurance after being fired?

You should always have individual Life Insurance even if you have group insurance. You should get personally owned insurance as young as you can as it will ultimately cost less. Most group plans are not protable however it sounds like yours is. This means you can convert it without any further evidence of insurability. If your health is good to excellent it may be less costly to look at other insurance options thru a broker. At that time the underwriting is based on your age and health and a few other criteria.

Can you cancel my child's health insurance at 18 if my child does not live at home?

The answer - for the time being - is going to depend on where you live and what kind of health insurance you have. It is possible that your health insurance company was within its rights to cancel a dependent child's health insurance at age 18 in these circumstances. However, one of the provisions of health reform which will become effective this year would allow children and young adults to retain health insurance coverage under their parents' health insurance plan until age 26. This isn't scheduled to take effect until September 23, 2010, but you should talk to your health insurance company to find out precisely when you may be able to re-enroll your son or daughter. Some insurers are now allowing earlier enrollments, while in other cases you may be required to wait until the next open-enrollment period following September 23, 2010.
