A hypertonic solution outside the cell is drawing out the water osmotically through the membrane. Solute/solvent where one is highly concentrated, solute, you will find water, the cell's solvent with the solute. Solute " sops " up free water molecules, so to speak.

in a semi-permeable membrane where only water is allowed to pass, water will always go from the side with the lowest solute concentration to the side with the highest. If a cell is placed in a concentrated salt solution the water will exit the cell, leaving the cytoplasm shrunken

Osmosis is the diffusion of water. During osmosis water is exiting the cell. Since cells are mainly water, because they are fluid, they tend to shrink.

What is the shrinking of a cell due to loss of water?

Osmosis, or diffusion of water across a membrane, is the process that's happening when a cell's cytoplasm shrinks due to water loss. The process by which a plant cell's cytoplasm shrinks due to water loss is called plasmolysis

Due to plasmolysis

What is plasmoysis?

The shrinking of protoplasm away from the cell wall of a plant or bacterium due to water loss from osmosis, thereby resulting in gaps between the cell wall and cell membrane.

Why is it that when unicellular organism when placed in a concentrated salt will dehydrated?

because the cytoplasm has a low concentration of salt while the outside has a high concentration bacause of this water comes out of the cell due to osmosis
