US half dollars made up till 1964 were struck in an alloy of 90% silver and 10% copper.

Halves dated 1965-1970 were made of 80% silver outer layers bonded to a 20% silver core, for an overall 40% silver content.

All circulating halves dated 1971 and later are made of the same copper-nickel clad composition as dimes and quarters. They do not contain any silver, regardless of popular misunderstandings.

Special 40% silver halves were struck in 1975-76 for the Bicentennial, and 90% silver halves have been made as "Prestige" coins since 1992. These coins were only sold to collectors. None were put in circulation.

The majority of 90% silver halves dated 1940 to 1964, and 40% silver halves 1965-70 are only worth their silver value, about 10-12X face as of 05/2010. Current copper-nickel halves that you may occasionally find in change will still only be worth face value. High-grade halves, and halves from the 1930s and before, may be worth more (sometimes much more) to a collector or dealer but you need to know the coin's date, mint mark, and condition to be certain.
