Veterinarians are highly trained medical scientists. They have to know how to perform a physical exam on a wide variety of species, how to take X-rays and other diagnostic images, how to perform surgery, how to administer medications and how to handle the animals.

Veterinarians need a wide range of skills covering multiple categories: technical, communication, business, critical thinking and time management.

Examples of technical skills include surgical technique, physical examination process, sample collection (blood, urine, feces, mass), and animal handling skills.

Veterinarians have to talk with a wide variety of people, from medical professionals to persons who may not be fluent in the primary language of the veterinarian. Also, veterinarians must be able to write clearly, as many of their instructions and recommendations will be written.
There are multiple skill sets you need as a veterinarian: technical skills, business skills, communication skills, etc.

Technical skills are the hands-on skills that clients see every day - auscultation, palpation, diagnostic skills, treatment, etc.

Business skills are more behind-the-scenes and include human resource management (hiring and firing), benefit management, financial and accounting, etc.

Communication skills are often called soft skills and include verbal communication, written communication, active listening and conflict management skills.
