In Midsummer's Night Dream Snug plays the Lion
Snug - A Midsummer Night's Dream - was created in 1596.
Snug plays the lion. Although he is afraid that he will not be able to learn a part, being "slow of study", and although he is assured that he will have "nothing but roaring" to say, he ends up memorizing and saying a long prologue explaining that he is not really a lion so the ladies need not be afraid. In most productions, he does a good job of this, proving that many people are a lot better at learning lines and acting than they think.
