Normally a group of people would protest outside an important building (like a palace or an embassy) and would stand around holding signs with messages on them and shouting out their views. Sometimes protesters survey people to get a petition or they may even try to occupy an area (such as in the Occupy Protests) or stop people entering a building. They are peaceful protests as long as the protesters do not attack anybody or damage and property.
MLK did not play a role in war, but rather: Civil unrest, civil disobedience, and civil protest (peaceful). He asked for equal opportunities for all people in the community, so as to end segregation and prejudice. Today laws protect all people equally, (more or less), and civil problems are handled mainly via attorneys rather than public protest. With the new "occupy movements", one is reminded of the style of the MLK era civil protests.
Yes. You're on public property and therefore not trespassing. In addition, while protesting you are exercising your rights under the first amendment and that's protected by the Constitution. Cops will probably still try to bother with you (ESP. If its an Occupy protest), though, so be prepared. Get a legal observer to attend the protest in case the police show. Also, remember that they CANNOT search you without consent and you are not required to give them any information, including your name.

The American 'Occupy' is a non-violent protest movement which consists of protestors occupying a public space, holding marches with signs and chants, and often establishing some temporary infrastructure such as food distribution and libraries. The main goals of the movement are greater income equality and accountability for the upper 1% of American income earners, especially those in the banking industry.
