A chloroplast is most like a solar cell. It absorbs light which begins photosynthesis in plants. Photosynthesis provides a plant with the energy, a.k.a. ATP, to go about the activities it must to do live.

Solar cells are definitely similar to plant cells for one very big reason. Both cells need sunlight in order to operate the most efficiently.
