No. At the time, Mexico was not a nation but a territory where many city-states of both Aztec and Mayan cultures were established. La Malinche was one of twenty slaves given to Cortes by the natives of Tabasco in 1519 and as such, made the deeds ordered by his master.
She was an intelligent woman who acted as interpreter, adviser, lover and intermediary for Hernan Cortes and her reputation has been altered over the years according to changing social and political perspectives.
